COLORFUL COCKTAILS
The 2020s apparently want to be more extravagant and glamorous than those a hundred years ago. Back then it was already shocking to wear a short skirt (which meant showing the ankle and a slight bit more) this time around it has gotten increasingly harder to shock anyone with what you wear – or don’t wear. In the last couple of years nacked dresses becoming a staple and skirts rising to the length of thick belts two decades ago nothing seems of limits. Therefore 2022 is more about excessive sparkle, shimmering materials, and extravagant accessories. This season nothing is too bold, too big and what used to be considered gaudy and tacky is just right for this winter. Following the sleek and understated insta-feeds of the last years now even the formerly more conservative LBD got a couple of upgrades and now is low-cut, adorned with unexpected details or sparkles and even the strongest devote of minimal style can enjoy an unexpected detail once in a while. This season basically nothing is off limits as long as it is out there and just a degree more extra than what it used to be in the last year and are just the perfect match for Christmas, New Years and any other event on the horizon.
As everyone likes to treat themselves to a new dress for these occasions – why not make it just new to you? This Drop has everything from delicately embroidered cocktail dresses that seductively move with the wearer to comfortable jersey dresses with dramatic cuts. Our favorites can cover every potential occasion coming up at the horizon and are just right for every kind of extravaganza. Plus, we added some fabulous accessories into the mix as well so you don’t only feel but also look like a million bucks.
RETROFÊTE
A wrap dress might be known for being perfect for meeting the in-laws mixed with a hint of sexiness but this one is something different. Here a bold metallic fabric softly is flowing around the wearer, if the maxi dress is wrapped. The flounces at the bottom of the skirt are softening the strong shoulders that end in three-quarter length sleeves – overall a design juxtaposing sweet and bold elements for a surprisingly versatile piece.
VIONNET
Vionnet is known for garments which are easy to wear pieces with a degree of glamour. Here a simple mini dress was taken as a base and got some asymmetric add-ons – creating the illusion of a midi dress from one side while the other one is showing off the wearer’s leg. Due to the draping of the fabric an architectural shape is created, mixing soft movement with harsh lines. Its bright, crimson color gives the piece gets another layer of fabulous making it perfect for a night out, a cocktail party or a gallery visit.
CHRISTIAN LACROIX BAZAR
For a person who adores color, bold patterns and interesting cuts this showstopping dress is a perfect match. The dress is composed of a heavy brocade that keeps the shape of the garment intact, while boldly mixing different patterns. Recognizably Lacroix is not only the mix of colors put as well the patchwork effect given to the structured dress. Soft pinks meet dark purple, greens and fuchsia. All the colors together create a bold yet very feminine dress.
DOROTHEE SCHUMACHER
The dusty lilac is very fitting for the colder month. The two-piece can be taken apart, becoming a skirt and a top, therefore giving the wearer a multitude of opportunities to re-wear and re-style. For every futuristic party, it can be styled with maybe metallic silver lipstick and a sleek ponytail.
ADAM LIPPES
Pretty in Pink is embodied in this dress by the American brand Adam Lippes. A pink bandeau is layered under a very deep V-neck for an extra touch of coolness. In addition to that suspender-style straps in back create an absolutely unique frock. The knee-length dress is a fun, bright and stylish companion for many different occasions.
LANVIN
To celebrate his 10-year anniversary at Lanvin, Alber Elbaz created this rose-colored midi dress embellished with delicate lace. Arguably the show's most eye-catching material was this ivory lace that Elbaz fashioned into a long-sleeved, zip-back dress. The pre-fall 2012 collection focused on new technologies and lots of volume, already apparent in the thick wool fabric.
LANVIN
Alber Elbaz created this seafoam-colored dress for Lanvins Autumn/winter 2013 collection. The slightly shimmering material and the long sleeves have a sweet vibe at the first glance. Due to the darts at the shoulder, a dramatic puffed sleeve is created, looking more futuristic than overly feminine. In addition to that, the textured fabric has vertically wound creases elongating the wearer optically.
PRADA
This cocktail dress by Prada does what Prada does best: surprise in a typically dramatic manner. Created of the most luscious satin in a bright turquoise the color alone is a statement. An integrated boned bustier is giving the wearer shape as well as security. Furthermore, this detail is subtly showing at the neckline, giving the dress a sexier look. At the front a deconstructed rose is added combined with a subtle bustle at the back to give the dress a certain degree of grandeur. This garment is perfect for a modern-day Marie Antoinette.
GIAMBATTISTA VALLI
The pistachio-colored gown will softly flow around you and give you a celestial appearance. Black-tie never has been this comfortable – the silk on the skin is very lightweight and the dress is not restrictive in any way. Beautiful ruffles and a cape-like back add to the royal aesthetic of the dress, which will make every wearer feel like a princess.
ROLAND MOURET X NET A PORTER
Roland Mouret created this very futuristic garment for a capsule collection with Net-a-Porter in 2017. Made of a metallic gold material the dress in itself is light reflecting and fabulous. The cut of the piece is typical for the designer: very sculptural and architectural. The short, asymmetric piece has one added pocket and overall is just waiting to make the wearer the center of attention.
VERSACE
When thinking about Versace the first words springing to mind more often than not are bold and sexy. Here a strapless minidress creates the illusion of being dipped in gold. As an additional component, a belt is added featuring thin, long beads to accentuate the wearer’s waist. Last but not least on the list of intricate details is a fringed seam made of beads climbing up the lower part of the dress. Thereby a chevron line is created fully made of beading.
NEEDLE & THREAD
Sweet and soft most accurately describe this NEEDLE & THREAD design. Daintily embroidered flowers in pastel hues are formed out of paillettes stitched onto a cream base. The bodice of the dress flares into an A-line skirt, which is flattering in shape and due to the midi length very elegant and appropriate for many occasions.
BY MALENE BIRGER
Less is more, gender fluidity and withe. This two-piece suit ticks all the boxes for the winter month. For some years suits have dominated the closets of women again and there is no sign of a decline in popularity to be expected anytime soon. Suits have been upgraded from office wear to daytime and evening wear as the simple and clean lines are easy to style. This By Malene Biger suit can as well be a closet staple for years to come. With a heavy boot, it is daytime appropriate, with a strappy sandal it turns into an evening look. The blazer on its own can be styled with pants or skirts and the pants with a heavy knit for a casual winter day. We love a good versatile piece in our closet.
LANVIN
This particular garment, look 16 from the 2019 fall ready-to-wear show, stems from the heritage luxury fashion icon Lanvin. In January of said year, Bruno Sialelli took over the position of creative director at Lanvin and quickly found a new direction for the brand, diverging from his two short-lived predecessors. The collection itself had gothic influences which are as well visible in the dress. The intricate black prints on a white background feature many details inspired by the middle ages. This intricately cut gown can be tied in the back and features a neck holder style leather chocker, to which the sleeves and the bodice of the dress are attached. Further design elements are combined in this one garment: from open-cut sleeves to layers which give the dress an appearance of being a creation of different silk scarfs.
