DROP 17 | A SECOND CHANCE
Second-Hand clothing is nothing new when it comes to (high) society. It doesn’t matter if we talk about
the lower economic classes who used to depend on it to be dressed or the royal courts. Court dresses used to be handed down, altered for others and even used as currencies. Only with easier access to off-the-shelf fabrics and clothes did second-hand fashion get a negative image. Back when clothes were worn for long periods of time the stigma of being cheap looking and worn, as well as being outdated or damaged often were true.
However, in recent years, flea markets and musty little shops have given way to online C2C platforms. There are typical C2C platforms like Ebay or Vestiaire, concierge services offered on websites like Rebelle and specialized resellers for a brand or product. A continuously growing number of fast fashion players such as H&M with their own website Sellpy, online retailers like Zalando with an integrated second-hand range, and luxury brands collaborating with established platforms allow the market to continue its growth. In the luxury segment, the big names are also giving the segment more and more credibility. Taking a look at their approaches three are standing out the most. Firstly Isabel Marant, who is offering a buyback service to then re-sell their own designs. Secondly, Gucci who takes the route of collaboration, working with The RealReal. And lastly, there is MiuMiu which bought pieces unrelated to their brand and gave them a makeover.
PROENZA SCHOULER WHITE LABEL
A picture is worth a thousand words - which is true with this detailed top from Proenza Schouler's White Lable. The front of the leather piece appears simple, with its thin fabric straps that tie at the back. At the back, on the other hand, the shirt is divided in two. In the upper part, it is closed tightly with buttons, in the lower part, on the other hand, only one button is used, through which the solid material is slightly flared.
PACO RABANNE
Here retro meets modern. In this one design by the brand Paco Rabanne an almost excessive amount of detail can be found. A floral pattern paired with white cuffs and a very dramatic almost western-style back detail and collar make a statement piece. The double dagger-style collar is putting an emphasis on the upper part of the garment and is balancing the romantic pattern into something cool.
NEOUS
Whoever said bags aren’t
art clearly never saw what Neous created. Here a small bag is swirling like a
modernist sculpture that can only be loved – even by the biggest advocate of
minimalism. Resembling a very abstract basket the wearer does not have to worry
about anyone snatching their belongings, as on the inside a small sack is to be
found, securely fitting all personal belongings.
LOEWE
The Spanish fashion brand Loewe created this asymmetrically cut, oversized shirt. A longer front in soft pink is paired with a white, slightly cropped back. The white sleeves again are set against rose-colored cuffs. These are buttoned like a male tuxedo shirt, to create an unexpected accent. The staple shirt is boasting of details, is a staple garment, fitting for seasons to come.
PHILOSOPHY DI LORENZO SERAFINI
This dress can easily
do both: be a daily basic or turned into a statement-setting look. Resembling an
oversized T-Shirt it fits loose on the body and is kept rather plain in structure.
What makes this piece something different is, that it is made of leather, a vibrant
green hue, and white contrast stitching.
ELLEME
Elleme created this
flattering and sculptural dress. Due to the ribbed texture of the garment, the
wearer will subtly be elongated. With its cape-style neckline, it creates a straight
line, elegantly covering the shoulders. While its midi length creates a graceful
piece, the skin-tight cut of the garment makes it young, interesting and just a
bit sexy.
LOUIS VUITTON
Louis Vuitton might
be known best for bags and luggage, but this pair of shoes is impossible to
miss. A chevron, more business-looking pattern, is paired with some subtle
sparkle, climbing up the heel and straps. Thereby the strappy sandals with a
platform come in a muted hue, are comfortable to wear but as well can easily be
incorporated into every look.
CHRISTIAN DIOR
With baby Tees being all
the rage this one is something special. In a typical Galliano for Dior manner there
a lingerie-inspired details, coming in form of lacing, not only at the front
but as well around the hem. A black base is thereby decorated with creamy silver
as well as glittering silver satin ribbons.
LUCIE VACLAV
This dress was made
for those who love to be the center of attention. The garment consists of a black,
vinyl mini tube, that is paired with an oversized pink ruffle as a strap. An
easy contender for everyone wanting to look glamorous and extravagant either in
the club or at a cocktail party.
GUCCI
Gucci is written all over this black pussy-bow blouse – calligraphy style. By going with a rainbow color-palette the blouse is not drab but fab. An attachable bow can be worn around the neck, as an accessory on a bag or be put into the wearer’s hair. The blouse itself can be worn with basically any color or pattern and definitely is as flattering as easy to style.
MOSCHINO CHEAP & CHIC
Military meets circus
is the best way to describe the eclectic piece by Moschino. For a brand known
for extravagant and bold designs, this piece is almost muted and thereby the
black blazer can easily be paired with many looks. The stitched-on piping at
the front and sides of the pieces creates soft and rounded shapes, while the structured
piece has some box pleats in the back for even more details.
BOYY
The Boyy bags are known as the Anti-It-Bag. Boyy aims to be a for everyone, instead of being a secluded and overly exclusive brand. Founded in 2006, the peak of glitz and kitsch, the low-key design filled a market gap. The clean lines, paired with a modern interpretation of decorative vintage oversized buckles are still recognizably different. The miniature version of the Boyy Bobby bag is an accessory for those in the know and on-trend, not those, who want to flaunt their spending ability.
PETER DO
Peter Do designed this turtleneck for his spring-summer 2020 collection, look 23. The designer is dedicated to clean and versatile designs, which are still very in the now. This yellow top is made of thin material and decorated with one single bandage. Keeping it monochromatic, clean yet dramatic is resulting in a closet staple, that will upgrade your outfit from common to noteworthy.
CHLOE
Chloe is a brand synonymous
with laid-back elegance. Here they created an oatmeal-colored long-sleeved
dress, which looks like nothing on the hanger but comes to life as soon as it
is put on. The zipper in the back is contrasted in a tonal but darker hue,
while the skirt is put in thick pleats, giving the skirt some movement.
LONGCHAMP
Longchamp is known for
the Le Pliage bag made out of nylon and being very durable. But for those who dislike
the material, there is a beautiful alternative: the Le Pliage Cuir. Made completely
out of leather and coming with a crossbody strap. For the roomy bag, the brand
made a fabulous advertisement about 11 years ago, with Coco Rocha as the face
of the campaign.
THEBE MAGUGU
Comfortable or a fashion
statement? With these red pants both options are available. A tie closure makes
these pants perfect for lounging around at home but they can as easily be
dressed up for a day out and about, with a chunky knit or shirt – the options
are basically endless, as the classic pants are elevated with their crimson color
and a knee-high slit in the front, while still giving an interesting structure to
the look.
ROKSANDA
The blouse cascading from pink to orange is the perfect resemblance of a summer sunset. With its billowing sleeves, the blouse is serving Disney princess vibes but doing so in a very grown-up and stylish way. Seen in the Pre-Fall 2019, look 26 shots it is still as fabulous three years later, for spring 2022.
