DROP 17 | A TRUE VINTAGE GEM

Second-Hand clothing is nothing new when it comes to (high) society. It doesn’t matter if we talk about
the lower economic classes who used to depend on it to be dressed or the royal courts. Court dresses used to be handed down, altered for others and even used as currencies. Only with easier access to off-the-shelf fabrics and clothes did second-hand fashion get a negative image. Back when clothes were worn for long periods of time the stigma of being cheap looking and worn, as well as being outdated or damaged often were true.

However, in recent years, flea markets and musty little shops have given way to online C2C platforms. There are typical C2C platforms like Ebay or Vestiaire, concierge services offered on websites like Rebelle and specialized resellers for a brand or product. A continuously growing number of fast fashion players such as H&M with their own website Sellpy, online retailers like Zalando with an integrated second-hand range, and luxury brands collaborating with established platforms allow the market to continue its growth. In the luxury segment, the big names are also giving the segment more and more credibility. Taking a look at their approaches three are standing out the most. Firstly Isabel Marant, who is offering a buyback service to then re-sell their own designs. Secondly, Gucci who takes the route of collaboration, working with The RealReal. And lastly, there is MiuMiu which bought pieces unrelated to their brand and gave them a
makeover.

THIERRY MUGLER

Thierry Mugler was and is known for a dramatic statement piece, with some unexpected detail. Here it is an incorporated vest creating a classic, structured and figure-hugging garment, that can be styled in an array of ways. One is to keep it all buttoned up, very proper, just showing a small part of the vest, maybe even paired with a white shirt.
Another is to just let the vest show, like a crop top, when wearing the jacket open. Therefore, it is just perfect for business occasions or casual events.

MUGLER

Mugler here combined a classic base with some playful details. A very classic and understated strapless dress is paired with a lace shirt-style collar, sleeves and cuffs. The dainty lace is set against a pin-striped fabric, which will make the wearer look leaner and taller. With its midi length the piece is balancing sexy and elegant, meanwhile conveying a certain Adams family je ne sais qoui Morticia would have adored.

YVES SAINT LAURENT

YSL is one of the brands which manages to consistently serve looks and rarely had one bad collection. One of the pieces responsible for the brands’ success might be this leather skirt. Ending around the knees, with all the zippers decorating the leather skirt it goes from onservative to a cool-girl aesthetic. Due to the zippers at the front, coming up from the hem, the skirt can be opened or closed to the wearers liking and showing off some leg.

MCM

This MCM dress manages to juxtapose cool and cute perfectly. A very feminine, empire waist dress almost looks like it is made for a schoolgirl. With a combination of two different materials the shinier, softer and more voluminous velvet is more of an attention grabber and will direct the attention of everyone looking at the wearer toward the face. But as it is an all-black dress it looks much more grown up and classic, with only the daintiest little crystal logo on the front.

LANVIN

Lanvin created this cocktail dress back in the 80s loaded with signifiers of the time. The ruffled sleeves and slight balloon-shaped skirt are paired with a square neckline. The 80s are present, without the over-the-top drama the decade has been so well known for. Buy one get one free never is something we will never promote here, except when we find a piece like this. The dress look is actually an illusion. The ensemble consists of a skirt and a Crop top, joined by buttons at the waist. Perfect for the post-Christmas time the bottom half can be worn as a sexy wrap skirt and the top can easily carry over to the summer with a skirt or pants. This particular garment could be imaged at the cast of Dynasty, may it be the original from the 80s or the new version currently on air – it stood the test of time.

FENDI

Fendis’ infamous Zucca print, a take on the Fendi F created by Karl Lagerfeld, is mostly seen on bags, jackets or the lining of clothes. But sometimes the rare luggage piece by Fendi can be sourced, like this one, which is covered in the popular pattern. A vintage suitcase, as it was typical back in the day, to be carried by hand is closed with a zipper and buckles, almost looking like belts around the piece for even more security. For many, this might be too impractical to travel with, but it can as well be a great home accessory.

PRADA

Over the last couple of seasons brown made a comeback and clearly is a go-to staple by now. Here it is one of the warmest chocolate browns, looking even softer due to it being suede leather. The pants are straight-cut and decorated with small buckles, for a more interesting look.

DIOR

Younger than the Lady Dior the Lady O bag is as classic. This bag from 1997, which would make it a Gianfranco Ferrédesign, is hard to surpass when it comes to 90s elegance. The dark olive cannage pattern is paired with shiny black leather handles in an oval O shape, which both are often used by this luxury Maison.

LOUIS VUITTON

The thing Vuitton does best are classic travel pieces. In this case, a soft trunk made of bright green Epi Leather. Epi is one of the genius inventions of the Maison, a structured leather that is very durable – perfect for pieces that are made to withstand friction and weather. This model is called Sirius and over the years has been produced in an array of sizes, colors and materials – something that cannot be missed for anyone wanting to travel in style.

YVES SAINT LAURENT VARIATION

The 80s were bold, glamorous and loud – just like this cropped YSL Variation blazer is. This cropped blazer is accented with a black collar and matching buttons. With its slightly pointed corners, it looks almost like a vintage riding garment, while the popped-up collar and the material give it a more elegant note – something that definitely used to be part of a power suit.

CHANTAL THOMASS

Today the brand Chantal Thomass is known for luxurious and delicate lingerie. Back in the 60s, the founding days of the brand, they focused on ready-to-wear. It took them another 15 years to put a focus on lingerie. But from day one on the garments were sexy and sensual and rich in detail, featuring ribbons or flounces, made of high-quality materials.

This example comes with boning and a body-hugging silhouette. The strings of shimmering, black pearls are not only beautifully contrasting the dark red velvet but also give the dress a more sensual appearance. The dress from the 1980s is clearly referencing lingerie and is even for today very sexy.

VERSACE

The stunning two-piece costume can be dated back to the fall/winter 1990 collection of Versace. Typical for Versace the set is boldly colorful and is boasting loud prints. Back then the patterns already had a royal feel – the first baroque prints omnipresent today. In addition, they are gold-colored for a more royal feel. Showcasing grandeur, glamour, and femineity this was the height of Versace, turning from the opulence of the 80s to a sleeker look for the 90s.

Our picture of reference showed that the look has been worn by Christy Turlington, one of the original supermodels. This is adding another layer of glamour and excitement to this true vintage gem, made for collectors or daring fashion icons.

YVES SAINT LAURENT RIVE GAUCHE

To avoid a fashion faux pax many rely on black, white and beige when getting dressed. Sporting vibrant colors, like this bright magenta, seem too scary. But there is a very easy solution, to not look like a cartoon character: go for a classic cut. This YSL Rive Gauche statement coat does this expertly. The clean lines balance out the bright colors and create a coat, that can accompany you for many seasons to come, without looking dated.
