LAST SEASONS LOOK

There are a number of tips and tricks when it comes to shopping second-hand. One of them is to keep it simple: go for a couple of seasons old – not last season so it is still on trend and for sure don’t go for the trend pieces to avoid a dated look. Taking a gamble and building a vintage collection is the only reason to purchase trend pieces just out of fashion – as they can be snatched up for incredibly low prices. If you have a good feeling for it you will be able to find pieces that later on will become valuable and will be re-issued or secondhand sought after. It is best to buy former it bags that have not yet been reissued. After a bit of research, you need to find the bags that match the zeitgeist of next season so you can buy them cheaply before everyone else is looking.

If you want to find pieces to wear today: opt for pieces that cannot be easily dated. Avoid designers who release notable prints for one season only. Find pieces that are only a few seasons old, not yet vintage but old enough to be forgotten. The focus here is on timeless and classic pieces in muted or neutral tones. Having a bold color that is no longer sought after and a design slightly out of fashion often leads to an outfit that appears thrown together and unfashionable instead of chic.

ANN DEMEULEMEESTER

This gold leather jacket is by Ann Demeulemeester, who is known for her deconstructivist fashion. Here the metallic gold is the unexpected element. Especially the shoulder details could be right out of a Star Wars movie, while the soft gold is not a common choice for a leather jacket. Paired with feminine ruffles at the sleeve, the juxtaposition of different styles is completed.

DOLCE & GABBANA

2002 – 2003 was the height of the vests and matching jackets for Dolce & Gabbana – barely any look on the runway was not showing this or one of their signature body hugging dresses. This year, going into the next, not only are vests back but as well is this piece reaching vintage status. The beautiful combination made of tweed can be worn as an ensemble or apart from each other.

DIOR

The perfectly tailored vest by Dior is an iteration of the famous Bar jacket of the Maison. Since the introduction of the garment in 1947 and with it the New Look the basic idea has been in almost every collection of Dior, no matter the current creative director. Here the jacket lost the sleeves and grew in length but kept the immaculate tailoring. The heavy material gives the vest a luxurious feel, while the elegance and simplicity of the cut will upgrade every look. Worn on its own, over a turtleneck or a blouse, this piece is as versatile as flattering.

YVES SAINT LAURENT

Saint Laurent did it again and created an astonishing stapel. The usually classic black blazer has been upgraded for the fall/winter 2010 collection with inserts of clear plastic film. By a strategic placement it is possible to wear the jacket without anything underneath to show some skin or style it in a myriad of other ways. This creation is very unique and recognizable, yet wearable for not only the most fashion forward.

PRADA

A classic boxy tweed jacket – here a dark Bordeaux is mixed with a miniscule dose of purple hues. Three pockets are added on the garment for a sportier and more laid-back look, without making the item a trend piece. Prada used hidden press studs to not disturb the otherwise clean lines of the blazer.

LANVIN

A cropped pink blazer fits into the current barbie color trend. Lanvin loves the usage of details so the jacket is decorated with different buttons on the sleeves and the front. The cut of the jacket combined with the bold color and large buttons suggests the design is from the '90s, although similar cuts were seen again in the fall 2016 collection.

LANVIN

This white leather jacket screams Y2K even it is later in the aughts – it’s from 2007. The bright white leather was popular in the time, as was the long tie that closes the jacket. Nonetheless, the tailored jacket could well be part of the Resort 2017 collection, which features some similar collar detailing, like a nod to the part.
