LANVIN LOVERS

Lanvin is France's oldest haute couture and fashion house still in business today. Some other luxury brands might have been founded earlier and are as well still around, but they did not produce fashion until much later.

The woman, who was business savvy enough to build an empire and fashionable enough to create everlasting beauty was born into a common middle-class family. As the daughter of a journalist, she was the oldest of eleven children. This situation meant she had to start working early. In 1873, at sixteen years old she started as an apprentice in a hat shop in Paris. Only six years later, in 1889 she ended the apprenticeship and opened her very first own shop. Another four years passed till she changed location and opened a store on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré under her very own name: Lanvin (Mademoiselle Jeanne) Modes.

THE LANVIN STYLE

Lanvin always stood for the use of bold colors and innovative designs. The founder of the brand never had a formal education in fashion design but was known for her talent to perfectly construct garments. That meant the designs were not drawn but instead materials were directly draped to achieve a true masterpiece. She worked with multilayered cuts or parallel stitching and made herself a name for her superior craftsmanship. To get the recognizable aesthetic Lanvin worked with many floating materials like chiffon as well as tulle or organza but as well satins, taffeta or lace. Lame was another material of choice as well as brocade or velvet – everything that looked and felt very luxurious. She innovated the way fashion was decorated – from intricate details to embroideries. One of her favoured decorations was marguerites, another nod to her beloved daughter Marguerite.

To celebrate his 10-year anniversary at Lanvin, Alber Elbaz created this rose-colored midi dress embellished with delicate lace. Arguably the show's most eye-catching material was this ivory lace that Elbaz fashioned into a long-sleeved, zip-back dress. The pre-fall 2012 collection focused on new technologies and lots of volume, already apparent in the thick wool fabric.

A cropped pink blazer fits into the current barbie color trend. Lanvin loves the usage of details so the jacket is decorated with different buttons on the sleeves and the front. The cut of the jacket combined with the bold color and large buttons suggests the design is from the '90s, although similar cuts were seen again in the fall 2016 collection.

This little white bag is an absolute gem to be found. The handles are discreetly attached via the golden initials of the brand founders J and L. Due to the similarities of the letters it almost appears like they're just part of the design rather than a logo. The long shoulder strap is attachable in addition to the short handles. These handles give the handbag a slight almond shape, in which everything can be elegantly accommodated.

This white leather jacket screams Y2K even it is later in the aughts – it’s from 2007. The bright white leather was popular in the time, as was the long tie that closes the jacket. Nonetheless, the tailored jacket could well be part of the Resort 2017 collection, which features some similar collar detailing, like a nod to the part.

Estimated to be from the 80s this dress was either designed by Maryll Lanvin or Claude Montana. Montana, known for his exaggerated shoulders is a strong contender for being the creative mind behind this piece. Like this piece, the current Lanvin collection is as well full of garments with strong shoulders without detailed ruffles. The blue leave design of the brocade material is elegantly providing an unexpected note.

LANVIN X ACNE

A creative collaboration between Lanvin and Acne in 2008 resulted in this dress. Acne, a brand with a broad product offering, used to be focused on jeans. The core competencies of both brands are expertly combined in this piece. Made of a for Lanvin untypical material, denim, a feminine, strapless dress is created, decorated with a simple black belt. The visible side zip, a well-known Lanvin hallmark under Alber Elbaz, eliminates the need for any visible branding.
